“Law Firm Partner and Former Assistant District Attorney”

John R. ‘Jack’ Phelps, of James Avenue, died on Tuesday, February 1, 2011. Born on July 30, 1926 in Niagara Falls, NY he was the son of the late Alpheus and Norine (Mangan) Phelps.

Mr. Phelps graduated from Niagara Falls Public Schools, Cornell University and Cornell Law School, beginning his legal career in 1953. Jack was a veteran of the United States Navy, during World War II, in the Asiatic Pacific Theater. He was a former partner and counsel to the Niagara Falls law firm of Phelps, Gray and Hewitt and Niagara County Assistant District Attorney until 1961. Mr. Phelps was a member of the Bar Association of Niagara Falls, NY and former president of the Niagara County Bar Association. Jack was an avid gardener and fisherman.

Mr. Phelps is survived by his wife, Jeanne (Rice) Phelps; daughters, Ellen Rowland of Virginia and Sandra Fischbein of California; step-children, Wendi Bazemore of Williamsville, NY, Daniel Bazemore of Maine, Timothy Bazemore of Connecticut and Jonathan Bazemore of Maryland; fourteen grandchildren and one great-grandson. Jack was predeceased by one daughter, Lorna and one great-grandson.

Visitation will be held on Friday from 1-5 p.m. at the OTTO REDANZ FUNERAL HOME, 2215 MILITARY ROAD, NIAGARA FALLS, NY (297-9007). Private funeral services and burial will be held in Riverdale Cemetery, Lewiston, NY. If desired, memorial offerings may be made to the United Way of Greater Niagara, 3000 Military Road, Niagara Falls, NY 14304.
