Sharon L. (Merritt) Hoyt, 64, of the Town of Niagara, NY, passed away on Monday, October 15, 2018 at Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center. Born on June 10, 1954 in Niagara Falls, NY, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Betty (Jackson) Merritt. On April 17, 1971, Sharon married James E. “Jim” Hoyt.
Sharon was a lifelong area resident and attended both LaSalle High School and Niagara Wheatfield High School. For 10 years, she was employed by the former Hills Department Store where she worked as a manager of several departments. Sharon proudly served as the first female volunteer firefighter in Niagara County and volunteered as a firefighter, ambulance secretary, vice president, treasurer and fire police officer for the former Niagara No. 1 Volunteer Fire Company. She was a life member of their exempts organization and a member of the Buff Social Club in the Town of Niagara.
In addition to her beloved husband, Sharon is survived by her daughters, Lisa (Thomas Bukowski) Hoyt, Lori (David Smith) Hoyt-Smith and Kari Hoyt; grandchildren, Chelsea, Owen, Chloe, Oceana and Kadan; siblings, Diana Merritt, Edward (Kari) Merritt and Michael Santiago and many nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a sister, Barbara Mattio and a brother, Tommy Merritt.
Visitation will be on Saturday, October 20th from 3-6 p.m. with a funeral service to follow visitation at 6:00 p.m. all to take place in the funeral chapel. Private interment, with Sharon’s family, will be in Acacia Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial offerings may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
