Amy Morton, a fierce athlete, joyful spirit, devoted wife, and beloved soap artisan, passed away peacefully on the morning of May 17 after courageously facing an aggressive brain cancer. She was 60 years old.
Born in Lewiston, New York, in 1964, Amy’s life was a beautiful collision of grit, heart, and curiosity. A trailblazer in women’s rugby, she began her career in 1981 in Georgia with the Atlanta Valkyries, earning selection as a Southern representative and competing in Washington, D.C. She continued to play with passion and camaraderie through several more seasons, including with the University of Georgia women’s club team, and across tournaments nationwide.
In 2015, Amy returned to her roots in Lewiston with her wife of 30 years, Amanda Roberts. Together, they made a home on eight acres beside Lake Ontario, where Amy reveled in driving her tractor, stewarding the land, and building a haven they both cherished.
Amy was endlessly curious and hands-on when it came to nature. She had been apprenticing with a local beekeeper, totally fascinated by the quiet genius of honeybees, and always eager to learn more.
Locally, Amy was best known as the founder of Tradewinds Soap, where her handmade creations reflected her care and skill. Her presence lit up the Lewiston Farmers Market every Saturday, and her absence will be deeply felt by her many friends and customers.
Amy is survived by her loving wife Amanda Roberts, her brothers John Morton (Montclair, NJ) and James Morton (Atlanta, GA), and her sister Mary Schneider (St. Augustine, FL). She is predeceased by her brother Michael Morton and sister Karen Burdick.
Amy was known for her sense of fun, her huge heart, and her countless friendships. She will be missed beyond measure. A memorial event to celebrate Amy’s life will be planned in the near future.
Amy’s family has entrusted her care to the Goodlander family, OTTO REDANZ FUNERAL HOME AND NIAGARA COUNTY CREMATION CARE, 2215 Military Road, Niagara Falls, NY (716-297-9007). Share condolences and memories at GOODLANDERCARES.com
