James Garito Life story

James P. Garito, 87, of Wheatfield, NY, passed from this life on January 3, 2024.  Born on March 2, 1936 in Clearfield, PA, he was the son of the late Phillip and Mae (Milliron) Garito.  On July 12, 1990, Jim married Anita C. Gareau.

Jim was employed for 37 years, as a millwright, working at the Tonawanda location of the General Motors Corporation and was a Veteran of the United States Army National Guard. He was a member of the American Legion Wheatfield Post #1451, where he volunteered at bingo and loved helping with the children’s Christmas parties.  Jim enjoyed woodworking and watching sports.  Most of all, he loved his family and grandchildren that put a smile on his face every time.

In addition to his beloved wife, Jim is survived by children, Douglas (Sharon) Garito, Cathi Garito, and Jason (Kiyomi) Henry; daughter-in-law, Jeanne Garito; grandchildren, Tony (Laura) Garito, Kasey (Todd) Garito-Reighley, Michael (Tiffany) Garito, Drew Garito, Margaret (Tom) Garito-Hanna, Shota Henry, and Anna Henry; great-grandchildren, Liam, Roan, Madelyn, Vincent, Lillian, and Emelia; sisters, Mary (late Ted) Shaw, and Louise Murray; sister-in-laws, Gertrude (Rene) Hamilton, Pauline Gareau, Florence (Michel) Lalonde, and Denise (late Victor) Gareau and several nieces, nephews and cousins.  Besides his parents, Jim was predeceased by a son, Vincent Garito; step-mother, Fannie Garito; siblings, Sarah Brunner, Joseph (late Ann) Garito, Jack Garito, Lillian Shugarts, Jeannette Ogden, and Dominic (late Marie) Garito and a sister-in-law, Lillian (late Joe) Richer.

The family will be present to receive friends on Sunday, from 3-7 p.m., at the OTTO REDANZ FUNERAL HOME, 2215 Military Road, Niagara Falls, NY (716-297-9007), where Jim’s funeral service will be held on Monday, January 8th, at 11:00 a.m., with Rev. Michael Borgstede officiating. Friends invited. Prayers of committal and entombment will follow in Elmlawn Cemetery, Tonawanda, NY.  In lieu of flowers, memorial offerings may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association and/or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
