James Martin “Stewy” Stewart, 79, passed away on August 3, 2025, in Lockport, New York. Born on November 4, 1945, in Pensacola, Florida. Jim lived a full and vibrant life marked by service, passion for the outdoors, and a deep love for his family.
Jim proudly served his country as a Petty Officer 2nd Class Yeoman in the United States Coast Guard. His time in the military reflected his steadfast commitment to duty, as he sought and obtained permission from his parents to enlist at 17. He served on the Icebreaker USS Mackinaw, and was proud of his service to the end of his days.
A man of many talents and interests, Jim was an avid hunter and fisherman who especially enjoyed ice fishing during the colder months. He found joy and satisfaction in gardening, crafting homemade sausages with the bounty from his hunts, and his love for cooking extended into winemaking. He loved to make large quantities of Corned Beef to share with his family and community around Saint Paddy’s day.
Jim is survived by his beloved wife Mary Lou; his daughters, Tiffany and Valerie; stepson, Larry; grandchildren, Ella, Connor, Victor, Fletcher, David, Jamie, and Hunter; great-grandchildren, Hunter and Jackson; sister, Lillian; and brother John. He was preceded in death by his parents, Vreeland and Blanche, brother Russell, sister Barbara, and stepdaughter Lynne.
His legacy lives on through the many lives he touched—family members who carry forward his traditions and memories of time spent together outdoors or around the table.
Services will be held privately with his family, burial taking place in the Western New York National Cemetery, Corfu, N.Y. If desired donations may be made to Niagara Hospice, 4675 Sunset Drive, Lockport, N.Y. 14094. Jim’s family has entrusted his care to OTTO REDANZ FUNERAL AND NIAGARA COUNTY CREMATION CARE (716-297-9007). Share condolences and memories at GOODLANDERCARES.com.
