Lois G. (Martin) Davey, 93, of Lewiston, NY, passed away Thursday, June 15, 2023 after a brief illness. She was born on the Six Nations of the Grand River reserve in Ontario, Canada on November 12, 1929, the daughter of Walter “Scotty” Martin and Ruby Miller Martin.
Having attended Indian Residential Schools in Canada, Mrs. Davey came to live in Niagara Falls, NY in 1942 with her grandmother, Sophie Martin, who was a co-founder of the Indian Defense League of America (IDLA).
Mrs. Davey graduated from Niagara Falls High School in 1947. She also graduated from Kelly Business Institute in 1953. She worked as a civilian employee at the Niagara Falls, NY Military Airbase from 1953 to 1955. She later went to work for Sears Roebuck and retired from there in 1987, and was also employed part-time at numerous retail shops in the Niagara area.
She was a dedicated craftsperson, primarily in ceramics, and operated her own small business and sold her work at numerous local craft shows. She enjoyed sewing, knitting. crocheting, and was an avid quilter. She made lifelong friends through her crafts and through her occupations.
She was pre-deceased by her husband of 55 years, Robert J. Davey (d. 2010). Survivors include their children: Cynthia L. Davey; Susan M. (Fred) Gigliotti and granddaughter, Alexa; Laura A. (David) Ward and granddaughter, Kelsey; Daniel V. Davey — all of Niagara Falls, NY; and Steven R. Davey (Maria Chase) and grandson, Kynan, and granddaughter, Larken, of Dedham, MA.
Mrs. Davey was also pre-deceased by her brothers, Angus “Bing” Martin and Richard “Dick” Martin of the Six Nations of the Grand River reserve. She was a member of the Lower Mohawk tribal band and maintained ties to friends and relatives on the reserve throughout her life.
Most of that life was spent in the company of her immediate family and relatives, and she always enjoyed the company of her large extended family and friends in blood, in law, and in kind.
Mrs. Davey had elected to donate her remains to the University of Buffalo Anatomical Gift Program. Family will welcome friends and relatives at the Otto Redanz Funeral Home on Military Road on July 10, 2023 from 2:00 - 4:00 pm to celebrate her life. No formal ceremonies will be held. Other arrangements will be carried out at the discretion of the family. Rather than flowers, donations to Niagara Hospice can be made in her name.
