Margaret Touma Life story

Margaret Ann Touma resided in Niagara Falls NY for the last sixty-eight years. She passed away at the age of 84 peacefully. Margaret had tenacity, perseverance, kindness beyond reproach and a zest for life! She was tiny but lit up a room every time she entered it! Family and friends were her whole world! She will be greatly missed every day!

Margaret was born June 30, 1939 as Margaret Lemenchick to Alex and Katherine Lemenchick (Kate died August 1939). She was adopted by Philip and Elsie Bolger. Elsie was Margaret’s first cousin and was their only child. However, Margaret had 14 siblings from her biological parents who she remained close with until they all predeceased her with the exception of her beloved sister-in-law Katheryn Lemenchick. Margaret was born in Renfrew Ontario Canada and attended St. Francis Xavier Church from grades 1-8, St. Joseph’s Academy from grades 9-13 and then Ottawa Teachers College and graduated in 1958. She first taught in Armpryor. In August of 1960 Margaret entered the Sisters of Holy Cross in Ottawa, Ontario for 16 months and left in December of 1961 due to ill health and her second hospitalization. In September of 1962 she had moved to Niagara Falls, Ontario and began teaching for the Welland County Separate School Board. She married the love of her life, Richard A. Touma on July 10, 1965 at St. Francis Xavier Church in Renfrew Ontario. In September of 1965, Margaret became the first music consultant that the Welland County Separate School Board had ever had. She held that position until December of 1966 when she left to have her first child, Catherine. She had her second child in July of 1968, Andrew. She was a stay at home mom for five years. In September of 1973 she went back to teaching in Niagara Falls Ontario and taught in the system until 1997 when she retired after teaching 30 years. Margaret primarily taught in Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten and then 3rd grade.  A highlight when she looked back on her teaching career were the many musicals she put on with her 3rd grade students. Parents and guests were always in awe of how well done they were.

Margaret was President of the St. John de LaSalle Home School Association, President of Niagara Woman’s Club on two different occasions, currently vice president and held every office they have and has been in the club over 50 years. She was past president of the Rosary Altar Society two times and was the first woman President of the St. John de LaSalle Parish Council. She is also a member as well as Sunshine and publicity chair for of the College Club of Niagara Falls, the Vice president for the Cayuga Island Garden Club and a loving member of The Tattler Club. She volunteered her services for all the schools her children attended, was a Children’s liturgy leader for two decades at St. Johns and volunteered at St. Mary’s Gift Shop.  Margaret also volunteered selling the early boards at the St. John de LaSalle Church Bingo. She loved her ‘Regulars”. However, a pinnacle achievement was when she was honored with the St. Joseph of the Worker Award by Bishop Head for all her tireless volunteer work/effort for St. John’s parish. Currently and for decades she has lectured, been a Eucharistic Minister and a Senior Altar Server. Margaret loved and lived for her extracurricular activities and getting together with her breakfast group both here in Niagara Falls NY and Ontario. Margaret was a people person. She was there in the best and worst of times by sending cards and making personal phone calls. She was a fierce friend, colleague, wife, mom and Nana. She never missed an event for her children or grandchildren. Her family was so important to her and she loved them with all her heart as did they love her with all of their hearts!

Margaret is predeceased by her husband Richard Touma of 54 years and survived by her children Catherine Touma D’Angelo (David) and Andrew Touma (Jocelyn).  She has ten grandchildren:  Nicholas D’Angelo, the late Chelsea D’Angelo, Philip D’Angelo, Alexander Touma, Britini D’Angelo, Benjamin Touma, Ana D’Angelo, Johnathan Touma, Michael Touma, and Madelyn Touma and one great-grandson Cameron Holland. Margaret is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
